Bennelong, Squire and Bushell

An article by Eamonn Duff in The Age on 27 March 2011 focused on the 'unlikely friendship' between the first Aboriginal statesman and an ex-convict brewer. Bennelong, who visited England with Governor Phillip, died on 2 January 1813 on the property which James Squire used to grow hops for his very successful brewery. Squire's land fronted the northern banks of the Parramatta River, in today's Sydney suburb of Putney. Squire buried Bennelong on his property and erected a plaque in his honour.

The story tangentially touches the life of Paul Bushell, as Squire stated late in 1820 that his best maize suppliers were the Hawkesbury farmers P Bushell, Yeoman and Kelly. (Refer to page 185 of the book Paul Bushell, Second Fleeter.) The story prompts the question - did Paul also know Bennelong?
